As the world slowly starts to return and buisness anxiously open doors theres a few hints and tips I can pass on to people behind and infront of the counter.

If you dont know I took a job as a key worker at the very start of this, when toilet roll was being hourded and roads where creepy through the rainbows and the claps through the anxious rise of traffic, as a cleaner you’ve a magic ability to often not be seen so you get to see human behaviour, or perhaps they just didnt mind.

But heres how you can HELP key workers, and buisness and doors open

  1. Stand back , it sounds obvious; its amazing how many forget
  2. Dont touch screens, lean around screen, lean over the counter put your hand around to touch our side of the screen , seriously…. I’ve seen it all! At the beginning I wanted to punch, scream… I did! That’s where germs land touching it is the STUPIDIST thing – WE WANT TO PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE WHEN YOU DO THIS .
  3. Dont use a gap, often theres gaps in screens to pass products through or walk through, it’s not a talking gap, I’ll put this in twice. STAND BEHIND THE GOD DAM SCREEN (face punch)/ we actually have a game called who uses the gap, it was fun at first, but it got to depressing …. the answer is. Everyone.
  4. Dont touch the card machine, if its contactless dont pick it up to bring it closer to you to…. blah blah, just lean ever so slightly and tap! It’s for YOUR safety weve been touching money.
  5. Dont put things on the counter, have minimal , have your card ready…. seriously digging through your handbag and getting out your continence on a serfice we cant possibly clean between each client isnt smart.
  6. I actually smile when I see masks, it’s a small shop front – masks protect everyone around you! The boys are working hard.
  7. Dont come in with a cough; remember that’s someone’s husband serving you, daughter, son, dad, brother, carer, sister; we dont need it, others in the shop dont need it, almost all shops will have a alternative way to shop. Stay home
  8. Use sanitizer, again we cant always clean doors between every client.
  9. Leave kids outside they just touch more, and if they absolutely 100% must come in, make sure they are well behaved and not eating, we are not cleaning up lollipop slobber; please!
  10. If something is wrong or unsafe… tell them, politely, dont film it and put it on social media – we dont always see it through the eyes of a client, perhaps we didnt see.

And most of these are of course natural and common sense!

BUT YOU WOULD BE AMAZED THAT IVE SEEN FULLY GROWN MEN PICK THEIR NOSE ITCH THEIR EYES AND THEN TOUCH THE COUNTER, PAY MACHINE AND DOOR

ITS SO HARD NOT TO SPRAY PEOPLE IN THE EYE WITH DETTOL

So what about going to work? What do I wish I had ? Well heres my list

Back to work must have list …..

  1. Canvas bags , loads! Washing your handbag nightly is impossible (and we know they carry germs!) so I’ve a bunch of canvas bags I can wash on high , the cheap ones shrink a little but nothing to bad.
  2. Tupperware/lunchboxes , again my purse was unwashable I chuck my card(this in a zip bag) , phone, ipod, hand sanitizer, keys, paracetamol all in a lunchbox , I can wash the box each night in hot soapy water and go over all my high touch stuff with anti-viral wipes. (I honestly now dont open it unless I have to, and wash my hands before i do!) Also taking more pack lunches!
  3. Flasks, no more communal mugs, i take my own flask same with water bottle.
  4. Wash powder i use alot more now, we strip at the door, the washing machine is actually at the back door so weirdly its helped with the washing it goes straight in the basket and nothing comes any further in, then we run straight through the house to the shower ; perhaps it feels extreme to some. That’s okay, it works for us. Either way. I’d get more wash powder you’ll find you cant reware clothing like before.
  5. Keep some cleaning rations in your car, I wash my hands and take my apron of before I leave work course! But you still got to get out the door, so I have a dettol I go over my hands and wheel and all the areas before I drive back alongside a bin bag for wipes, gloves , ect.

ITS OKAY TO FEEL EMOTIONALLY ABOUT GOING BACK, IT IS GOING TO BE HARD.

MY ONLY ADVICE IS FIND A WAY TO KEEP YOURSELF SAFE, YOU SIMPLY CANT CONTROL EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING AROUND YOU, OBVIOUSLY THAT CAN EFFECT YOU, BUT YOU WILL NEVER EVER GET ANYWHERE TRYING. (BELIVE ME)

My other plea is to support small and local, end of this costa will be fine, McDonald’s will survive, tesco will be there ….. seek out the individual, one of a kind, self employed people- they CARE, so guess what, they will be washing hands twice as much, because they absolutely cannot afford to go down.

So you go in with your mask and sanitizer and stand back, and protect eachother! Let’s actually help our OWN high street, village and community rather than chain brands.

Let’s gram small local talented unique buisness like we gram chain brand coffee cups

It would make world of difference to people who’ve missed out on a lot of support and help.
